During my internship at Microsoft, I was part of the Office Growth Systems Design Team, a division within the broader Office Product Group. This team specializes in developing platform, mobile, and iPad solutions that drive product-led growth across Microsoft’s suite of productivity software, including AI-driven innovations. Our focus was on analyzing user interactions with Microsoft 365 products, using data to improve user experiences, and providing actionable insights that inform future investments.
Context
File cards for the backstage home for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (WXP) on iPads were designed for a centralized app experience for commercial audiences.
Challenge
However, these cards were not designed for standalone WXP apps and have limited use for consumer users, which is the main user base on the iPad.
Project Overview
I aimed to rethink the backstage experience of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (WXP) on iPad and iOS by redesigning file cards for a seamless, cross-platform experience and identifying key areas for improvement based on user needs. To support this, I led a baseline study and conducted competitive analysis on both first-party and third-party file cards. I kicked off design explorations and facilitated an ideation workshop with the team to generate solutions. Over the course of multiple iterations, I validated my designs through designing for edge cases, creating user scenarios, and launching user testing sessions. Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with product managers, engineers, user researchers, and end users to ensure alignment and impact.
